Frequently Asked Questions

Rules You MUST Read Before Posting

General Conduct
Do not give away event information! You can ruin an underground event by telling the wrong person! If you don’t know about the rave scene or EDM culture, educate yourself before posting! Do not ask for directions or the info line, these will be posted the night of. Don’t play loud music when driving up, and cover your flashy clothes until you’re inside. Keep it on the down low! Idiots violating these simple rules will be burned at the stake.
Top

Before Posting
Lurk first! We cannot stress this enough. Before posting, make sure you have the appropriate forum, then ask yourself the following question:
"Am I making a post which is either funny, informative, or interesting on any level?"
If you can answer "yes" to this, then please post. If you cannot, then refrain from posting. If you post anyway, the mods will probably remove your topic and issue you a warning.
Top

Before Replying
Before replying, please ask yourself the following question:
"Does my reply offer any significant advice or help contribute to the conversation in any fashion?"
If you can answer "yes" to this, then please reply. If you cannot, then refrain from replying.
Top

Topic Titles
Make your topic titles as descriptive and succinct as possible. We cannot stress this enough. Users should not have to read the topic to understand what it’s about. If your topic poses a question, then put that question in the topic title. If the moderators have to edit your topic titles you may receive a warning.
Top

Low Content Posts
Please do not make posts containing no content (IE, "first post," "+1," “agreed,” etc.). These just clutter the forums. If you don’t like a thread or don’t have anything to contribute, just move on; replies consisting solely of smilies or trolling fall into this category. As a general rule, write as if you were speaking in real life to another human being. Do not use any catchphrases, memes, internet slang, or any other crap that makes you look like a 12-year old.
Top

Worthless Posts
We do not care if you are drunk or high; please do not inform us of either. Please check to see if the post is a redux, duplicate posts fall into this category. Please do not post crap asking us to vote for you on some website, give you referrals for free iPods / flatscreens / spare tires, or any other semi-spam things.
Top

Stay On Topic
Post replies that further the discussion, instead of detracting from it. This is a subjective rule left up to the moderator discretion. There’s a fine line between asshattery and worthless posts. Walk it if you dare!
Top

Spelling and Grammar
Please learn how to write properly. This is more of a guideline than a rule, but please refrain from using internet slang, abbreviations, 1337 sp33k, or generally writing like you’re a 12-year-old on AIM.
Top

Karma
• Reasons for karma must be related to the post.
• Giving negative karma is only allowed for violating rules, or personal attacks.
Top

Hate speech
Offensive terms such as "faggot" or "nigger" may or may not be moderated based on context of the sentence. If they were meant as humor with absolutely no offensive slurs meant, the user may not be banned or probated. This rule is completely, 100% subjective and is based on the mod reading the post at the time. Use at your own peril.
Top

Promoting Events
One thread per event only! Threads are automatically moved to the 'Reviews' forum. All discussion pertaining to an event goes in the event thread.
Top

Harassment
If somebody is harassing you on the forums then discuss it with them over PM or email before contacting a mod about it. Flames and insults do not constitute harassment. Do not post others' personal information (phone number, addresses, emails, etc.). Try to stay out of other peoples' personal lives as well.
Top

Spam & Flooding
Spamming and flooding will result in an instant permanent ban. If you're questioning this logic, you probably belong in the kindergarden playground known as /b/.
Top

Respect the Moderators
The moderators are here to keep the forums safe, sane, and secure. If they ask you to do something, please do it. Please do not harass or intentionally annoy the mods. If you do not like the mods or the moderation, feel free to not post here.
Top

Warnings & Bans
Warnings:
If you violate a rule you may be issued a warning from a moderator. Warnings are meant to show you how not to act. Don’t take them too personally. Warnings expire after 45 days. If you accumulate 3 current warnings your posts will require moderator approval. If you feel you’ve been given a warning in error please PM the administrator.

Bans:
Users may be banned if they interfere with an event or are disruptive to the community. It is the sole discretion of the administrator to ban users. Bans are permanent and meant as a last resort. All your posts may be deleted and nothing will be mentioned of your ban.

Bumping

Galaxy Raver

Galaxy Raver Manifesto
Galaxy Raver is a place on the internet for the Northern California underground. As rave has become packaged and commercialized, sold to people as a commodity through massives and clubs, there are those of us who refuse to be eaten by the establishment. We cannot capture the "vibe" with words, but we can cherish and manifest the spirit while facilitating discussion between ravers, trancers, and lovers of EDM culture. Here we can get together and discuss the music, the scene, and everything in between. Galaxy Raver will be kept safe and regularly maintained so people can focus on building community and exchanging information.
Top

Who runs Galaxy Raver?
Galaxy Raver is owned and operated by dreamdust. Galaxy Raver was created for the community and is not run for profit. The costs associated with maintaining Galaxy Raver are provided by dreamdust, sponsors, and volunteers. Dreamdust contributes about 5-10 hours per week and $30 per month to keep the fire going.
Top

How did it start?
Galaxy Raver started April 21st, 2008. It was created to fill a void left by the absence of the original SF-Raves calendar, as well as a lack of quality forums for the Northern California rave culture.
Top

Who coded this web site?
Galaxy Raver is built on a heavily-modified PHPBB3 codebase. Dreamdust has added a calendar, chat, and other custom features on-top of the original forum software. All code is copyright its respective authors. PHPBB3 (in its unmodified form) is produced, released and is copyright phpBB Group. It is made available under the GNU General Public License and may be freely distributed. See the link for more details.
Top

Why isn’t X feature available?
Because I'm doing this for free, and don't have time to implement every idea. Let me know if there's something that you'd like to see!

Donations

Help Keep Galaxy Raver Running!

Galaxy Raver is a non-profit entity and supported by volunteers. We need all the help we can get in covering the costs for maintaining this web site. I (dreamdust) personally donate at least 5-10 hours per week of my time and pay for all web-hosting expenses ($30 per month).

Login and Registration

I’ve lost my password!
Don’t panic! While your password cannot be retrieved, it can easily be reset. Visit the login page and click I’ve forgotten my password. Follow the instructions and you should be able to log in again shortly.
Top

Why can’t I login?
There are several reasons why this could occur. First, ensure your username and password are correct. If they are, try using the lost password tool to recover your password. If that doesn't work, contact the administrator.
Top

Why do I get logged off automatically?
If you do not check the Log me in automatically box when you login, the board will only keep you logged in for a preset time. This prevents misuse of your account by anyone else. To stay logged in, check the box during login. This is not recommended if you access the board from a shared computer, e.g. library, internet cafe, university computer lab, etc. If you do not see this checkbox, it means the board administrator has disabled this feature.
Top

I registered but cannot login!
First, check your username and password. If they are correct, then one of two things may have happened. This board requires new registrations to be activated by e-mail; this information was present during registration. If you were sent an e-mail, follow the instructions. If you did not receive an e-mail, you may have provided an incorrect e-mail address or the e-mail may have been picked up by a spam filer. If you are sure the e-mail address you provided is correct, try contacting an administrator.
Top

I registered in the past but cannot login any more?!
Attempt to locate the e-mail sent to you when you first registered, check your username and password and try again. It is possible an administrator has deactivated or deleted your account for some reason. Also, many boards periodically remove users who have not posted for a long time to reduce the size of the database. If this has happened, try registering again and being more involved in discussions.
Top

Why can’t I register?
It is possible the website owner has banned your IP address or disallowed the username you are attempting to register. The website owner could have also disabled registration to prevent new visitors from signing up. Contact a board administrator for assistance.
Top

What does the “Delete all board cookies” do?
“Delete all board cookies” deletes the cookies created by phpBB which keep you authenticated and logged into the board. It also provides functions such as read tracking if they have been enabled by the board owner. If you are having login or logout problems, deleting board cookies may help.

How do I change my settings / preferences / password / etc.?
Visit your User Control Panel; a link can be found at the top navigation bar, in the bottom-left region. This system will allow you to change all your settings and preferences.
Top

How do I change my avatar?
To change your avatar, go to your User Control Panel. Select the Profile tab, and then select Edit avatar from the menu on the left. You can upload an avatar from your computer, or link to one elsewhere on the web. Uploaded avatars will be resized to the maximum dimensions allowed. Please note that resizing of animated GIF's will not work. Please resize them prior to uploading.
Top

Disable signatures
You can disable the display of signatures throughout the forum by going to your User Control Panel. Select the Board Preferences tab, then select Edit display options from the menu to the left. Choose the No button under Display signatures.

Posting

How do I post a topic?
To post a new topic in a forum, first find the forum appropriate for your topic. Once you're in the appropriate forum, click the "New Topic" button to the top-left of the screen.
Top

How do I edit or delete a post?
Unless you are a board administrator or moderator, you can only edit or delete your own posts. You can edit a post by clicking the edit button for the relevant post, sometimes for only a limited time after the post was made. If someone has already replied to the post, you will find a small piece of text output below the post when you return to the topic which lists the number of times you edited it along with the date and time. This will only appear if someone has made a reply; it will not appear if a moderator or administrator edited the post, though they may leave a note as to why they’ve edited the post at their own digression. Please note that normal users cannot delete a post once someone has replied.
Top

How do I bump my topic?
Posting replies to bump a topic is not allowed. You must use the "bump topic" link at the bottom of the page to bump a topic. This link will appear if you are the topic starter or last poster and it has been more than 1 day since the topic was last posted to.
Top

How do I post images?
You may upload images to the forum by clicking the "Upload Attachments" tab at the bottom towards the bottom of the screen when making a post. Alternatively, you may link to an image stored on a publicly accessible web server, e.g. http://www.example.com/my-picture.gif. You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor images stored behind authentication mechanisms, e.g. hotmail or yahoo mailboxes, password protected sites, etc. To display the image use the BBCode [img] tag.
Top

How do I add a signature to my post?
To add a signature to a post you must first create one via your User Control Panel. Once created, you can check the Attach a signature box on the posting form to add your signature. You can also add a signature by default to all your posts by checking the appropriate radio button in your profile. If you do so, you can still prevent a signature being added to individual posts by un-checking the add signature box within the posting form.
Top

What is the “Save” button for in topic posting?
This allows you to save passages to be completed and submitted at a later date. To reload a saved passage, visit the User Control Panel.
Top

How can I report posts to a moderator?
If a post is in obvious or blatant violation of the posted rules, you may report the post to a moderator. You should see a button or icon with an exclamation mark "!" for reporting posts above the post you wish to report. Clicking this will walk you through the steps necessary to report the post.
Top

How do I create a poll?
When posting a new topic or editing the first post of a topic, click the “Poll creation” tab below the main posting form; if you cannot see this, you do not have appropriate permissions to create polls. Enter a title and at least two options in the appropriate fields, making sure each option is on a separate line in the textarea. You can also set the number of options users may select during voting under “Options per user”, a time limit in days for the poll (0 for infinite duration) and lastly the option to allow users to amend their votes.
Top

How do I edit or delete a poll?
As with posts, polls can only be edited by the original poster, a moderator or an administrator. To edit a poll, click to edit the first post in the topic; this always has the poll associated with it. If no one has cast a vote, users can delete the poll or edit any poll option. However, if members have already placed votes, only moderators or administrators can edit or delete it. This prevents the poll’s options from being changed mid-way through a poll.
Top

Why can’t I add more poll options?
The limit for poll options is set by the board administrator. If you feel you need to add more options to your poll then the allowed amount, contact the board administrator.
Top

Formatting Posts and BBCode

How do I format my post? What is BBCode?
Click here for a complete BBCode guide. BBCode is a special implementation of HTML, offering great formatting control on particular objects in a post. BBCode itself is similar in style to HTML, but tags are enclosed in square brackets [ and ] rather than < and >. For more information on BBCode see the guide which can be accessed from the posting page or by clicking here.
Top

Can I use HTML?
No. It is not possible to post HTML on this board and have it rendered as HTML. Most formatting which can be carried out using HTML can be applied using BBCode instead.
Top

What are Smilies?
The full list of emoticons can be seen on the posting screen, by clicking "View more smilies." Try not to overuse smilies, however, as they can quickly render a post unreadable and a moderator may edit them out or remove the post altogether. You are limited to a maximum of 8 smileys per post.
Top

Reporting / Flagging Posts

Reporting or flagging a post
To report a post to the moderator for violating the rules or abusive behavior, click the report post button (a triangle with an exclamation mark) located at the top of each post. This will mark the post with a different color and notify the moderators. Abusing the reporting feature is against the rules and may be grounds for a permanent ban.

Karma

What are Karma Points?
Karma points represent your reputation throughout the forum. Karma points are negative or positive. You can earn them by having other users rate one of your posts positively or negatively. Users with a high amount of good karma points have more karma power, which means that when they award karma points, they award more points than someone with less karma power.

Karma points and their related post and comment are displayed by clicking the square next to the users rating:

This square represents a user's karma points. One square for every 50 points (this may change).
Top

How do I give Karma Points?
You can only give karma once you have at least 1 karma point and 1 post. To give karma click the "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" button for a post you'd like to rate. Enter a reason for giving the karma, and abide by the rules.

The board administrator may grant you permission to change your default usergroup via your User Control Panel.
Top

Administrators
Administrators are members assigned with the highest level of control over the entire board. These members can control all facets of board operation, including setting permissions, banning users, creating usergroups or moderators, etc., dependent upon the board founder and what permissions he or she has given the other administrators. They may also have full moderator capabilities in all forums, depending on the settings put forth by the board founder.
Top

Moderators
Moderators are individuals (or groups of individuals) who look after the forums from day to day. Private Messaging

I keep getting unwanted private messages!
You can block a user from sending you private messages by using message rules within your User Control Panel. If you are receiving abusive private messages from a particular user, inform a board administrator; they have the power to prevent a user from sending private messages.
Top

I have received a spamming or abusive e-mail from someone on this board!
We are sorry to hear that. The e-mail form feature of this board includes safeguards to try and track users who send such posts, so e-mail the board administrator with a full copy of the e-mail you received. It is very important that this includes the headers that contain the details of the user that sent the e-mail. The board administrator can then take action.

Why does my search return a blank page!?
Your search returned too many results for the webserver to handle. Use “Advanced search” and be more specific in the terms used and forums that are to be searched.

How do I search for members?
Go to the home page and towards the bottom below the online users list is a link, "View member list."
